1839

The Trail of Tears begins after Cherokee leaders Major Ridge, John Ridge, and Elias Boudinot are assassinated for signing the Treaty of New Echota. The "Five Civilized Tribes" (Cherokee, Muscogee, Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw), are forced to relocate by federal troops. Around 4,000 out of the 16,000 tribal members died.

1870

President Ulysses S. Grant signs an act by Congress to create the U.S. Department of Justice.

1940

The first Dairy Queen opens at at 501 N. Chicago Street in Joliet, Illinois. The original Dairy Queen closed in 1950 but has remained a historical city landmark.

1942

The Pledge of Allegiance is formally recognized by U.S. Congress. It was formally adopted into the United States Flag Code on December 28, 1945.

1944

President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 into law. Also known as the G.I. Bill, the legislation provided returning World War II veterans with unemployment compensation, low-interest mortgages, tuition and living stipends to attend college or vocational school.

1955

Walt Disney releases the theatrical film of The Lady and the Tramp. It was the first Disney film to be filmed in the CinemaScope widescreen format.
