NATIONAL SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK WEEK

National School Social Work Week is the first full week of March (Sunday – Saturday). The week celebrates school social workers across the country. It also highlights their vital role in helping students meet academic, social, and emotional challenges.

School Social Workers are trained mental health professionals with a degree in social work. They provide services related to a person's social, emotional, and life adjustment to school and society. School Social Workers are the link between the home, school, and community providing direct and indirect services to students, families, and school personnel.

The U.S. Government estimates 40,000 school social workers in elementary and secondary schools.

HOW TO OBSERVE #SchoolSocialWorkWeek

• Invite a school social worker to speak at a brown bag lunch.

• Send them a personal thank you note or card.

• Learn how school social workers improve students' lives.

• Share why you love being a school social worker.

• Follow on social media using #SchoolSocialWorkWeek, #SSWweek, #thewholechild, #advocacy, or #NSCW.

NATIONAL SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK WEEK HISTORY

The School Social Work Association of America promotes National School Social Work Week.

We could find no official first-ever school social work week. We did find, however, the book School Social Work. It says school social work began during the school year 1907–08 and was established simultaneously in New York City, Boston, Chicago, and New Haven, Connecticut.
