National Audiology Awareness Month is an annual designation observed in October. This time of year, we are surrounded by things that stimulate our senses. We smell apple cinnamon candles, we taste pumpkin spice and comfort food, and we feel the weather beginning to change. But what about what we hear? Although it's something many of us take for granted, our ability to hear and listen is one of the senses we rely on the most... Which is why it's so important to honor National Audiology Awareness Month and protect the health of our hearing.

Go get your ears checked and use #AudiologyAwarenessMonth to post on social media. We live in a very noisy world, and the statistics surrounding hearing loss are actually quite shocking. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, 37.5 million people in the U.S. have some degree of hearing loss. Sadly, studies show that a majority of people with hearing loss wait to seek treatment after noticing the issue for up to 7-10 years. By that time, hearing generally worsens dramatically. It can also contribute to other health problems. The bottom line is, our hearing is very important to our overall well-being so take some time this month to get your hearing checked, and encourage those around you to do the same!

NATIONAL AUDIOLOGY AWARENESS MONTH HISTORY

National Audiology Awareness Month started in 2008 and was created by the American Academy of Audiology. They founded this month to bring awareness to hearing health and the importance of protecting our ability to hear. The AAA's mission is to further the profession of audiology by promoting understanding of the topic and educating the public about how important hearing protection truly is.
